Reflect on the DIBELS activity. Which two areas did you choose to practice scoring? How did you do? Was it easy/difficult? Upload pictures of your score sheets.


•I think that all of the DIBELS activities were very informative. I think some were harder than others. The two I choose to do were the Oral Reading Fluency and the Retell. I picked these two because they went hand and hand with each other. I never really thought about how students could describe so much about a story by only reading 60 words but when hearing the student do his retell and listen to him only know one thing about the story all I could think of was about all the other details he got and could have talked about in that short period of reading. This really opened my eyes to all the detail in stories that normally we probably don't even think about or pay attention to. 

   List two benefits of using Curriculum-Based Measurement (e.g., DIBELS) to monitor students’ reading progress.

    1.It helps to establish benchmarks for students, making it easier for the parents and teachers to see how well the student is improving or not.

2.It is easy to keep track of therefore the student and teacher will be able to come up with weekly, monthly or even yearly goals for the student to hit. The student will be able to see how much they need to improve. 


How can you use CBM data to discuss a student’s progress with her or his parents?

You can use CBM data to discuss students progress with their parents by showing the parents where the student was at the beginning of the year and then retest every month or show and compare how much they have improved. You can show the parents how their student is performing compared to the average (all other students in the classroom). Students could keep graphs to show how much they are improving throughout the year.



Based on the readings and videos, list three benefits of MTSS (RTI and PBIS) as it relates to preventing and intervening with academic difficulties and challenging behaviors.

1. They want to improve students both academically and behaviorally
2. Creates a better learning environment for all students. 
3. Creates a very clear expectation on how students should behave

Based on the readings and videos, list three potential downfalls of MTSS (RTI and PBIS).

-Not all teachers may be on board with PBIS making this process very difficult in these cases
-There may be students who don’t fit any of the 3 tiers
-It can be very time consuming

    Danielle,
    That retelling was no joke. I tried to put myself in the childs shoes for the retelling the first time I watched it, and I realized that even though he read the words in the book he had a difficult time making many of them out, so his brain wasn't thinking about what was going on in the story but rather how to figure out this complex words.
    But this are important for all the reasons you stated, they allow the teachers to get benchmark results so that they can work with the student.
    I think the MTSS is an interesting plan of action and requires a lot of work and dedication. But if everyone is on board it can be very beneficial for the entire school.

    I did the same two test that you did. From personal experience, I can tell you they may be informative in lower grades, but around the 3rd time doing them with a 5th grader it is hard to tell if they are giving you their very best. You almost have to drag them out of class as they complain and sigh loudly that they are sick of taking all these tests. The teachers were frustrated too, because they barely had time to finish everything else, and now they are expected to do extra testing. These arguments are not mentioned often, but I think they need to be considered.

    It's funny you guys talk about retelling! Today in my classroom I am reading with a first grade little girl. We are reading out of a reading book with a bunch of short stories in it, and she can retell the story better than I could. There was questions at the end and I wasn't expecting her to ask me them, so I just read every other page without really retaining the details, boy did she bust me, haha. After that I read to remember! I think you are right about it being time consuming, but I think once teacher's do something for a little bit then it becomes second nature. Like a teacher who is just now starting out, she has a lot of late nights and time spent into her classroom materials, unlike that of one who has been teaching for even just 2 years who has accumulated things.

Lost Teeth Video Many people don't usually lose a lot of teeth before the age of 5 (kindergarten) most of the time but the older they get the more teeth they have probably lost. They are realizing this so the teacher wants her students to make predictions on what they think their data will tell them about each grade.  Do you remember losing your first tooth?  The insight I get about the children's thinking about why the ranges would be different is the students thought that the range would be lower in the lower grades but the higher grades actually had the lower range of number of teeth lost. Module Twelve

Coordinate Grids The websites that I explored were:  Gregs Grid Graphs- I thought this site was a good one. It has the student first figure out the coordinates by matching the letters to the coordinates. The it shows the points with letters and the students need to write out the coordinate. One thing I notices though is that it states that the coordinates are written with parentheses but when the site has you write out the coordinates it doesn't allow enough typing to do so. This could confuse students in the long run and not use parentheses.  Stock the Shelves- I think students would think this is a fun game to play. It makes you be completely accurate on clicking your points, if you are even a little bit in the box and not on the center of the 2 lines it counts it wrong. This is something that students could do to practice to make sure they are understanding where coordinates are. Module Eleven

Pentomino Activities Before going on the website to do this activities I thought they were going to be super easy. Boy was I wrong. It took me multiple tries to figure out 1 way to get them to work on the easy level. I tried multiple times for a good 10 minutes on the medium level. I even asked my boyfriend to come try and he also had a hard time and ending up giving up after a couple tries. This made me feel a little better about not being able to figure it out. haha One thing I did notice doing this activity was that if i was able to use certain pentominos more then once it would be a lot easier to do. But that isn't the case. I tried the hard one once just to see what it looked like and as you can guess I was unable to figure it out. I became very frustrated with the petomino spatial activities as I tried several times and just couldn't figure it out. I feel like if it is hard for me how can I expect my elementary students to be able to do it. If I had them do activities ...
