Module Six

Box Plots

I would want to teach a lesson to Class B because most of the class seems to understand the topic. There are just a few students who don't understand the topic well. I feel like you couldnt just teach a follow-up lesson to Class A, with class A you need to really reteach pretty much the whole lesson because it seems like none of the class really understood anything that was taught. I mean the highest test score was a 60% which is pretty low and a D in most schools.
Do you think it would be easier to teach Class A or Class B? Why?

Three Questions to ask students:

1. Which class on average do you think collected more trash? - I think the US class collected more data based on looking at the two box plots. This is because the average amount from the German class was a little over 50 lbs and the average for the US class was about 80 lbs.
2. How does the amount of students in each class effect the data?
- I don't think that the amount of students has that big of an effect on the amount collected because the amount is an average not a total amount of trash collected.
3. What does the data tell you about the average German family compared to the average family in the United States? -It tells us that the average German family produces a lot less trash then the average United States family

 Common Core Standards
My First Two Impressions:
1. I liked how they were formatted. The subheading made it really easy to search for what I wanted to. Also my using this format is made it very easy to compare the standards of one grade to another grade.
2. I also enjoyed how each grade had a page in the beginning for an overview of what all was included.

Did you think it was easy to compare the different grade levels standards?

Changes in Concepts through the grades
In 1st and 2nd grade students need to add and subtract within 20 and then in 3rd grade it changes to multiply and divide within 100. In 1st grade to 5th grade students need to be able to represent and interpret data. When you go and read more in depth on the standard is talks about different kinds of graphs they need to be able to interpret.

They change from in 1st grade they have to represent and interpret data by answering questions like which has more or less. While in 4th grade they have to be able to make line plots with fractions and decimals. Figure out whys to to problems including addition and subtraction of fractions and then show it on line plots.

Curriculum Resources

I choose Grade 4: How many people in the family?

In this activity the students are collecting data on how big each of the families are. After collecting their own data it is given to the class and they use the data to answer questions.
I want students to focus on finding the average or mean of data when working on this assignment. I would work to bring the students to find this by before talking about this assignment that we discuss what mean is. The way I would make this assignment more accessible for students is by defining for the students what a "family" is, that way they dont take forever trying to decide what they think a "family" should be.Most people think of family as their members living in their house. But now a days some have 2 sets of parents and siblings so should family be their parents and siblings? If I choose who lived with me my family would be 2. If I choose my family as my parents and siblings mine would be 7. A way to make it harder for the students is along with them finding out what the mean is they also need to find information like the mode, and medium. And complete a graph of some sort for the data. I could also make it more difficult by giving a different definition of family like the students whole entire family (aunts, uncles, cousins, grandparents.). This way would have a lot more variety in the data I think. If I had to come up with the answer for this question it would take me some time, I have a HUGE family. Questions I might as students while they are working on this data is What they see? How there answer compared to the rest of the class? What is the biggest family? What is the smallest family? By listening to my students I would learn about the concepts that they understand and which ones we need to work more on. The concepts taught in this lesson align with the Common Core Standards because students need to be able to represent and interpret data and they are representing the data by giving their own answers and making plots with their classmates answers. They are interpreting the data when they are done with collecting it and comparing their answers to their classmates and answering questions about it.

What definition would you give your students to use on what "family" is for this assignment?

Comments

  1. I responded that I would rather teach class A for the exact reason you stated. For me, if I see that the majority of the class didn't get a concept, then I know I can just reteach it a different way. It is like starting over. I find that easier than trying to figure out what works and what didn't.

I agree that the headings made it easy to read. I was surprised by the amount they were expected to know though.

I would tell them family doesn't always mean those you are related to, but those that you love and feel close to.

Behavior Management

The classroom management style used in my field experience classroom is a school-wide behavior management chart. Each day the students start on the color "green" throughout the day they can either move up or down the chart based on their behavior. If the teacher needs to tell the student to stop what they are doing more than once or twice the student then has to go move their clip down on the chart. When students are listening really well, being super quiet, or doing what they are supposed to without the teacher telling them she will have him move their clip up. Students who receive "pink" get VIP privileges the next day and get the sit at a special table instead of their normal seat. Whichever color the students get is marked in their take-home folder at the end of the day for parents to see. Each color is also worth a certain amount of classroom money that the students can use to do fun activities like watching a movie at the end of the 9 weeks.  STO...

Module Three

Textbook Reading: Explain the three measures of central tendency, and how teachers can help children t better understand each of these measures. 1. Mode: The mode of data is basically whatever answer has the most answers. Ways to teachers to help children better understand this is I always remember that mode was like word most like "most" so if you tell students in order to find the mode you look at what answer comes up the most. It also makes it easy to figure out when you take your data and put it into a frequency chart to see how many times each answer was given.  2. Median: The median is the number in the middle when the numbers are put in order from least to most or most to least. I remember my teachers always telling me to find the median we first have to put the data in order from least to greatest, writing all numbers (even if they showed up more then once). After doing that you would cross out the number farther to the left, then the right, and keep doing it t...
